T Wilmshurst, Deal

Post by PeterW » Sun Jul 29, 2018 5:10 pm

We have a clock with a small T Wilmshurst Deal plate lower section of dial. It is very similar in other respects to the photo on the T Wilmshurst entry. However the clock has a painting at top of the face plate, with a circular plate around and is called 'The Royal George'. The paining is of the Royal George, which sank off I of Wight 1782, showing the ship after it sank. Is there any explanation as to how the clock could be re-worked?

Dials were often painted to order. It could be that the original customer had some connection with the ship or the sinking. Unfortunately we will probably never know.
